Spicy Orkid began when I found it increasingly difficult to dress my changing body in clothes that fit my petite frame. I also learned that a higher price did not always mean better fabric, construction or fit. I wanted to make clothing whose value you could see and feel.

My late grandmother once sold fabric, building something of her own around materials she knew and loved. In starting Spicy Orkid, I feel as though I’m picking up a thread she left behind. 
Her care for cloth shapes how I think about every piece: what it is made from,  who makes it and how much we make.

Materials

I choose fabric for how it feels, moves and holds up in the garment it is meant to become. I’m building direct relationships with mill owners and fabric suppliers so I can understand the materials at their source and make more informed choices about what goes into each piece.

Labor

Every garment begins with petite proportions and is developed with care for fit and construction. I chose domestic production because I want to build a long-term working relationship with the people making the clothes. Working closely together gives us room to solve problems, refine details and take pride in the finished piece.

Impact

Spicy Orkid is made to order. Customers can experience the fit and fabric through samples, then place an order during one of our production windows. Making clothes in response to real orders helps us avoid producing excess inventory and gives each garment a reason to exist.
